Callaway Elyte Irons Review (2025)

This is our 2025 Taylormade P790 irons review.

I’m an avid golfer, 8ish handicap on my way to a 2 (been a 5.6) and frequent tester of golf clubs and equipment since 2015.

I tested the new 2025 P790s for two weeks on the course, on the range, and on my hitting mat at home.

Considerations

Not a major improvement over the 2023 P790s.

Verdict

The 2025 P790s are all about controllable distance and soft/solid sound and feel to me.

  • THE best looking P790s yet, and I thought the2023’slooked killer. New more compact head design looks even MORE player.
  • Improved sound & feel. Very solid
  • They launch high on a penetrating trajectory.
  • You can shape them or flight them .

Low handicappers looking for a little extra pop need to take a look at these.

Launch Monitor – 1

7-Iron Launch Monitor Data

I threw the 8-iron numbers in there because the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ starts in the 7-iron. In prior sets with the speed slot, I’ve experienced a greater distance gap between these two clubs.

There’s about 12ish yards in the 2025 set. Very acceptable.

Notes on 7-iron Distances: Flushed regular swing speed shots got me about 181 – 183 yards. Slight misses put me in the mid 170 yard range.

I STOOD on 3 of them and got 195 yards. Not usable on the course, but interesting.

Overview & Why Consider the 2025 Taylormade P790 Irons

The 2025 Taylormade P790 irons continue the evolution of one of the most popular players’ distance irons in the game—but this version isn’t just a cosmetic refresh.

It brings meaningful upgrades in distance, feel, forgiveness, and consistency.

From a sleeker profile to an all-new forged face material, every detail has been fine-tuned for better players who still want some built-in help.

Key Technology Upgrades

Enhanced Distance and Forgiveness

  • Ultra-High Strength 4340M Forged Face: The 2025 P·790 irons feature a new 4340M forged face material, which is 20% stronger than previous generations. This enhancement increases ball speed and expands the sweet spot by up to 24% compared to the 2023 P·790 7-iron.

Refined Feel and Sound

  • SpeedFoam™ Air: Incorporated within each iron, SpeedFoam™ Air contributes to a solid and satisfying feel at impact, marking an improvement over earlier models.

Optimized Launch and Consistency

  • FLTD CG™ (Flighted Center of Gravity): This technology strategically positions the center of gravity in each iron to optimize launch angles, spin rates, and distance gapping throughout the set, leading to increased carry distances and consistent performance.

Sleek, Player-Centric Design

  • Thinner Topline and Compact Blade Length: The 2025 P·790 irons have been refined with a thinner topline for a cleaner look at address, inspiring confidence for players seeking a more compact, player-preferred profile.
  • Enhanced Sole Radius and Progressive Leading Edge: These design improvements ensure consistent turf interaction and improved impact locations, contributing to better playability across various course conditions.

These advancements make the 2025 P·790 irons a compelling choice for golfers seeking a blend of distance, forgiveness, and refined aesthetics

Sound/ Feel: (4) Really solid, really nice. (Mizuno JPX 925 Forged ironsare the best in the business and these are right behind them.)

Forgiveness: (4) You can get away with some, but not a ton. Center strikes are rewarded. Slight misses get you close.

Distance: (4) Long, consistent with their loft. Great for accuracy and scoring.

Flight / Launch:(4.5)They launch high with good carry.

Wallet Damage: (4)~$200/club. The high end, but standard forpremiumplayer distance irons. Not sure how to grade the value for premium player distance irons.

My Experience with 2025 P790s

Right out of the box, the 2025 P790s look stunning. Not just flashy—they’re thoughtfully designed, with a compact head that sits perfectly behind the ball at address.

Classic player appeal without being intimidating.

Paired with the KBS Tour Lite shafts, they feel well-balanced and ready to go.

I tested them alongside the Ping G440s during a range session. I started with the G440s—solid feel, high launch, and a good trajectory. I was enjoying them.

Then I picked up the P790s.

Completely different level of “solid.” The feel was instantly more premium—dense, crisp, and controlled.

It was the perfect back-to-back test: a well-made game improvement iron versus a refined player distance iron. The difference was obvious.

Distance-wise, the P790s aren’t outrageously long like some of the spring-loaded game improvement irons I’ve hit lately. Instead, they offer consistent, playable distance—which required a little adjustment during my round.

But once I got a feel for how they flew, I started dialing in and hitting my targets confidently.

Who are new P790 irons for?

These are ideal for low and better mid handicappers who:

  • Need consistent gapping and high-launch performance throughout the set.
  • Want a players-style iron that still offers some forgiveness.
  • Appreciate a premium, forged feel.
  • Prefer compact shaping but don’t want the punishment of a full-blown blade.

Low handicaps: (Oh Yes) These babies have your number. Give them a look if you’re in the market.
Mid handicaps: (Maybe) Close to a 10? Worth testing. You’ve got better options otherwise.
High handicaps: (Nope) Check these out.

Potential Alternatives

Callaway Apex Ai200s – One of my favorites of 2025. Superb performance – launch, distance, forgiveness, workability, and great from the rough. Great sound and feel, too.

Taylormade P770s – Another favorite of mine. Gorgeous. Similar performance to the P790s. Lofts are ~2 degrees weaker per club, so probably a little less distance. Same refined feel. (Other than loft, these are basically the same clubs)

Mizuno JPX 925 Hot Metal Pros – Best sound and feel in the game and perform with the best of them for about $50 less per club.

Customer Reviews

An average rating of 4.8/5 from 96 reviews. 99% would recommend the new P790s to a friend.(1)

What they’re saying:

  • Owners of prior P790 models say these are a little longer.
  • Some better mid handicaps rave about the forgiveness.
  • Gorgeous (I concur).

Final Verdict

The 2025 P790s strike a perfect balance between player distance and player performance—but I’d lean more toward calling them true player performance irons.

They might just be the best-looking irons on the market right now. Compact, clean, and modern without trying too hard.

  • Distance is right in line with their slightly stronger lofts—typically anywhere from half a club to a full club stronger than my everyday gamers. But it’s consistent and manageable.
  • The sound and feel are excellent—solid, muted, and confidence-inspiring on center strikes.
  • Playability is where these really shine. You can shape shots, control trajectory, and vary distance when needed. They launch high with strong carry, and while they’re not ultra-forgiving, slight mishits won’t punish you.

If you want the look and control of a player iron with a touch of help in distance, forgiveness, and launch, the 2025 P790s are absolutely worth a demo.

Should You Upgrade from the 2023 P790s?
I say this all the time, but it still applies: No.

  • The improvements are real—especially in feel and looks—but they’re incremental. Not enough to justify a $200/club upgrade if you’re already gaming the 2023s.

As usual…

My#1 suggestionis to get your hands on them before you buy. Either at your local golf store or take advantage ofGlobal Golf’s Utry trial program. I use it and recommend it.
